Our Yirgacheffe beans from the Negele Gorbitu Cooperative

We get these beans from the Negele Gornitu Cooperative, member of the Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (SCFCU) and founded at the end of the communist regime in Ethiopia, during the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic (1996). The coffee farmers’ plots are located on the border of the Oromia and Yirgacheffe regions.

The Ethiopian beans come from the highlands of this region. These are Yirgacheffe-type coffees. Full-bodied, a pronounced acidity, fruity flavours with berry notes and sweet aromas develop after having been roasted here in the shop.

SCFCU members have been growing and processing fine Sidamo-type coffee for more than 30 years. Annually, they produce about 10,000 tonnes of high-quality organic Arabica beans, of which almost 95% are treated through a washing process.

SCFCU has been Fair Trade Certified by Fair Trade Labelling Organizations International (FLO-Cert) since 2003. They have played a leading role in developing relationships between producers and buyers, enabling them to export their extraordinary, high quality coffee directly to international markets. Today, SCFCU represents 53 cooperatives and more than 80,000 small farmer families, making it the second largest coffee producer cooperative union in Ethiopia.
